1961 Chassis The frame was in very good condition. There was a small rust repair needed on the end of the rear cross member. I had the frame sandblasted and then primed with PPG DP-90. The Black paint was a catalyzed urethane from PPG flattened to about a 50% sheen.
Brackets and pans The previous owner had the frame and metal parts refinished, but the quality of work was very poor. I decided that a 1961 FI Corvette should have a quality restoration. The paint was a very thick rubbery type paint that need to be removed using a chemical paint stripper. The parts are ready for media blasting and then a coat of PPG DP primer and black top coat with the correct paint sheen.
rear axel assembly The rear axel housing was correct positraction unit, but the differential was a non-positraction 336:1 unit. I have purchased the correct date coded positraction carrier and will be install a new 3.70:1 positraction gear unit.
Date Coded positraction carrier Note that the large P is very thin and correct for a Corvette application and were casted in Saginaw MI and will have a single digit for the year (0). The thicker P symbol was used on passenger cars and were cast in Tonawanda NY and will have a double digit for the year (60) 1960.
Axel Housing There are differences between positraction and non-positraction axel housings. The positraction housings have the vent tube off the left top axel tube and there is a splash or drip baffle in side the housing. The axle lengths are also different. Check the 1961 Sateen silver pictures for the original inspection markings for the differential-axel assembly.
Differential Carrier Series #3 The original positraction differential was changed out for an non-positraction unit. I purchased the correct date coded carrier with the thin line "P" symbol. After cleaning I noticed a yellow dab of paint on the inside of the carrier.
splash or drip baffle The splash-drip baffle is only in the Positraction differential axle housing.

Axle housing flange There are differences between the Posi and Non-Posi flanges, I am not sure how to determine the differences so any help will be appreciated.     mailto:ray63@rochester.rr.com
Positraction axles Positraction axles are different from the non-positraction axels, Note: Yellow indicates positraction axles. As I receive additional information about the positraction differential and axles, I will update this box. Note the different length of the axles and the yellow paint markings. Yellow was used to designate positraction axles.
Steering column gear box Note the casting numbers on the gear box and cover plate. These are casting numbers and not part numbers.
Rear springs Original rear leaf springs, Note: Original springs will have a part number and grooves for the spring liners.
Spring part number Part number:
Brake Drums All four brake drums have the part number: 3752623. Three of the drums have the casting number as pictured, one has a different font. I need to research the reason for the different fonts.

Pulling third arm bearing  I was having problems removing the steering bearing from the third-arm. I built the puller viewed in the photo provided by Joe Mish. I have to secure longer bolts, but the bearing is almost out; Thanks! Joe
